What is Electrochemistry of Metals and Semiconductors by A.K. Vijh, Marcel Dekker Inc., New York, 1973, xiv+297 page, $23.50 about?

This book is subtitled "The application of solid state science to electrochemical phenomena". A better description occurs at the beginning of chapter 1 where the author states as his object: "to review those electrode processes in which an elementary knowledge of solid state materials science is helpful.., for the understanding of electrode phenomena". As a glance at the contents will indicate the book covers a fairly wide range of contemporary electrochemical interests and since it is rather short it is not surprising that this coverage is rather superficial. In fact its most useful function will be similar to that of an "Annual Report". It provides a reasonable survey of recent literature on the subject. The disappointing feature is precisely in the "applications of solid state science". The description of the theory of the solid state in chapter 1 is inadequate for the purpose even within the scope of 23 pages. The space used in discussing cohesive forces and correlation would have been better occupied with a better discussion of electrons and holes in semiconductors although the description of equation (1-10) as representing non-ohmic behaviour suggests that the result might be
