John Ferris was born around 1640 in Massachusetts and removed to Westchester County, New York around 1665. He was one of the original grantees of the Westchester patent in 1667. As a young man, he was publicly whipped twice for bestiality charges. Later in life, he became a Quaker. His 1715 will left most of his estate to his son Peter but also made provisions for his daughters and the Quaker burying ground on his land.
