LEADERS IN THE field of hepatology throughout the world have combined their efforts to prepare a system of nomenclature that simplifies terminology and establishes reliable diagnostic criteria within a comprehensive clinicopathologic framework. Each section describes a class of disorders, such as hepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, or cholestasis. The diagnostic criteria for specific diseases are then listed, and "accepted" and "rejected" synonyms are identified. A section on diagnostic methods is also provided. It critically reviews currently available tests that have been stratified according to their suitability for use in primary, secondary, and tertiary medical settings. The weakest part of the book is the index. It should be expanded with vocabulary currently familiar to physicians in order to facilitate identification of acceptable diagnostic terms. For example, it is not immediately clear where to find, classify, and codify such conditions as nonspecific reactive hepatitis, syphilis, or shock.
