What is Queer Sensibilities and Other Fagchild Tools about?
Marriage for queer citizens is a narrative of assimilation to heteronormativity. Courts legitimate marriage as the social institution around which society has been and should be organized. Requiring states to recognize same-sex marriages, courts emphasize queer sameness to heterosexuals, the same as queers whose pastiche imitation of heteronormativity, namely, child rearing, emphasizes and replicates fictions of reproductive futurism. This essay criticizes marriage as privileging heteronormativity in citizenship at the expense of queer sensibilities: that is, marriage privileges some future child that does not exist at the expense of citizen queers who are now here. Alexis de Tocqueville observed in the 1830s that Americans fascinate themselves with equality because the benefits of equality are immediately felt, its evils less so: None but attentive and clear-sighted men perceive the perils with which equality threatens us, and they commonly avoid pointing them out. . . .
