RATIONALE: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic disease characterized by itchy inflamed skin. We investigated the profile of allergen sensitization in adult patients with AD using multiplexed allergen microarray. METHODS: 39 patients with moderate and severe AD, attending the Allergy or Dermatology Clinics at our Institution, were enrolled. Total and specific IgE were quantitated by ImmunoCAP and ImmunoCAP-ISACÒ, respectively. RESULTS: Patients were aged 14-66 years-old (mean 6 SD 34.3 6 2.1 years), 64% female. Mean SCORAD was 36.6(2-90). Geometric mean (GM) of total IgE was 1,963 UI/mL (24-63,000UI/mL). Allergens from dust mites were dominant, with sensitization to Derp1, and to Derf1, Derp2, and Derf2 in 82% and 85% patients, with GM 27.6;50.0;39.2;45.4 ISU-E, respectively, followed by cat (38%), dog (36%) and grass pollen (36%) allergens. IgE to allergens from cockroach, fungi, most tree and weed pollens, latex and insect venoms was found in <20% of patients at low levels.
