S ince its inception in 2012 (1), the quarterly Journal of Clinical Microbiology biograph- ical feature has sought to briefly chronicle the careers, achievements, and perhaps idiosyncrasies of (to date 30) pioneering and impactful medical and clinical microbiologists. Subjects for this feature are selected by way of discussion and polling of editors of the journal on a semiannual basis. On occasion, some authors of the biographical feature have had the honor, not to mention pressure-packed challenge, of profiling a past mentor (2, 3). In the presented feature, this author assumes this assignment by briefly summarizing the career of Dr. Franklin P. Koontz, a significant contributor to the fields of both public health and clinical microbiology for nearly 40 years. This challenge is heightened exponentially when one considers the kind and gentle, sometimes gregarious, sometimes mischievous, sometimes "push-the-envelope" edgy, sometimes self-effacing, almost always lively nature of his personality.
