Paris was a shepherd prince of Troy who was abandoned as an infant and raised by shepherds. The goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite quarreled over a golden apple. They appealed to Paris to judge which was fairest. Each goddess offered him a reward: Hera promised power and wealth; Athena promised wisdom; Aphrodite promised the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Sparta. Paris chose Aphrodite and awarded her the apple, beginning the events that led to the Trojan War.
