About this document

Heart Structure: Layers and Functions by Christella Kate is a document available to read on EtoBox.

The heart consists of four chambers and valves that regulate blood flow through the circulatory system. It has three layers - an outer epicardium, middle myocardium made of cardiac muscle that contracts and relaxes, and inner endocardium. The myocardium is thicker in the ventricles which must pump harder than the atria. On average the heart beats 100,000 times per day circulating over 5 liters of blood through the body every minute in a cardiac cycle.
