developed a liquid cell based on graphene layers for in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This is the fi rst report of an in situ TEM under the most realistic conditions using electron beam for imaging the mechanism of colloidal platinum nanocrystal growth with atomic level resolution. As seen in Figure 1 , several critical steps in the nanoparticle formation including site selective coalescence, structural reshaping after coalescence and surface faceting have been observed in real time. The results published in the journal Science are likely to lead to several advances in the design of homogeneous assemblies of nanoparticles of defi ned sizes, morphology, and connectivity. In general, the technique opens up avenues for a better understanding of a number of physical, chemical, and biological phenomena that take place in liquids in the nanometer scale.
