## Abstract The effect of the polymer microenvironment polarity on some reactions of polymers is briefly discussed. The polymer microenvironment polarity has been measured using the Kosower semiempirical polarity scale based on the energy of the solvatochromic chargetransfer absorption band. The microenvironment polarity of synthetic vinylic polymers due to the nonpolar contribution of the polymer chain has been found to be lower than that of a solvent. Furthermore, the photochemical isomerization of the stilbene moiety in the side chain of poly (2‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate), a reaction sensitive to the medium polarity, was investigated. A satisfactory correlation was found between the determined polymer microenvironment polarity and the rates of the isomerization.
