Royal Dutch/Shell has been extracting oil from Ogoni lands in Nigeria since the 1950s, but the indigenous Ogoni people see little benefit and claim environmental degradation. In the 1990s, Ogoni leader Ken Saro-Wiwa led protests against Shell and the Nigerian government. Despite international pressure, Saro-Wiwa and eight others were executed in 1995, criticizing Shell for not doing more to influence Nigeria
