What is Formaldehyde-based adhesives for oil palm-based panels: Application and properties about?

Bono et al. (2006) , variations in the formulation used during preparation of formaldehyde-based adhesives can cause different resin properties. Good formaldehyde-based adhesives should have good viscosity, maximum solubility in water, minimum curing period at room temperature, and maximum storage life. Basically, during the fabrication of an oil palm-based panel, formaldehyde-based adhesive should be capable of interacting physically, chemically, or both with the surface of the oil palm biomass in such a manner that stresses are transferred between bonded members, thus improving the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of oil palm biomass. Common formaldehyde-based adhesives used in the panels industry are urea-formaldehyde (UF), melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF), and phenol-formaldehyde (PF). All these formaldehyde-based adhesives have different advantages and disadvantages. UF offers advantages like being low in cost, hardness, initial water solubility, low flammability, good thermal properties, ease of use under a wide variety of curing conditions, low cure temperatures, and no color changes in the cured end products (Ormondroyd, 2015;Conner and Bhuiyan, 2017).
