The thyroid gland secretes two main hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones regulate metabolism in tissues throughout the body. The thyroid takes up iodine from the bloodstream and uses it to produce T4 and T3. Thyroglobulin, a protein made by thyroid cells, collects in the thyroid follicles and captures iodine atoms. Thyroid peroxidase then catalyzes the addition of iodine to tyrosine residues on thyroglobulin, forming the precursor hormones. When needed, the thyroid releases T4
