What is Learning Progressions: Affordances, Critiques, and Pathways Toward Equity about?
As with other constructs with widespread appeal (e.g., "inquiry"), a range of meanings has been attached to "learning progressions," and the distinction between this and similar constructs is not always clear. In this article, I define a learning progression to be a framework that represents student learning of a competency through a series of components (e.g., levels, constituent "building blocks") that describe the increasingly more difficult, complex, and/or sophisticated performances expected as students learn. This broad definition encompasses wide variation in frameworks that have been labeled "learning progressions"; it also includes learning trajectories (often in mathematics), for example Simon (1995) and Maloney et al. (2014). Although informed by disciplinary perspectives, learning progressions describe competencies from the point of view of the student, rather than disciplinary logic (e.g., Bailey and Heritage, 2014;Fonger et al., 2018). To capture the wide range of knowledge, practices, and other learning targets that learning progressions may represent, I draw on the notion of competencies as "complex cognitive abilities" and "affective and volitional dispositions" th
