What is Lipid Digestion and Absorption Process about?
Lipids are insoluble in water and require emulsification for digestion. [1] Bile salts emulsify lipids into micelles for lipase enzymes to act upon, breaking lipids into fatty acids. [2] Lipases in the mouth, stomach, and pancreas digest lipids into fatty acids, monoglycerides, and diglycerides. [3] These products are absorbed via diffusion and transported through the intestinal cells resynthesized into triglycerides and cholesterol for absorption into lymphatic system as chylomicrons.
