The Donner Party was a group of 89 American pioneers who attempted to travel to California in 1846 but ended up trapped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains by an early winter snowstorm. Due to poor planning and taking a risky shortcut, they did not reach the mountains until November, when 37 feet of snow had already fallen.
