Segunda Solis Katigbak was born in 1863 in Lipa, Batangas to a prominent family. As a young woman, she attended the best school for girls in Manila where she met Jose Rizal, who became infatuated with her. However, Segunda was engaged to Manuel Luz from a wealthy family in Lipa. Segunda and Manuel married in 1877 and had nine children. They built a large family home in Lipa where their children and grandchildren were raised.
