What is The Shanta about?

The aliens (Shantha) collected many humans and systematically destroyed most of the population through radiation. They altered Earth to be more hospitable, melting ice caps. They created a new race of neo-humans and conducted experiments, creating many new races by combining genes of different creatures. For years the Shantha monitored Earth and its races, maintaining limits on groups. Eventually the Shantha disappeared and have not been seen since, though some were left behind as caretakers.
