What is Types of Biodegradable Polymers about?

Rise of environmental pollution by synthetic polymers in developing countries have reached dangerous levels. Plastics produced from petroleum resources are not biodegradable. Because they defy microbial degradation, they end up in the landfills and damage the environment. To top that off, oil prices have increased remarkably. These are the two primary reasons which have brought interest in biodegradable polymers. Although, biodegradable plastics and polymers were first introduced in 1980s, they recently started to get traction, predominantly due to two major reasons: firstly environmental concerns, and secondly the realization that our petroleum resources are finite. Biodegradable polymers are broadly classified into two main categories: (1) natural and (2) synthetic. Natural polymers are available in large quantities from renewable sources, while synthetic polymers are produced from nonrenewable petroleum resources. Biodegradable polymers have a shelf life and involve biodegradation process. Biodegradation of polymers happen mostly due to cleavage of bonds through hydrolysis or by enzyme action in the polymer leading polymer erosion. There are many biodegradable polymers that have
