When Rick wanted to participate in a benefit run at age 11, his father Dick retired from the military to help Rick complete athletic events, including marathons and Ironman triathlons. Rick was fitted with a computer at age 11 that allowed him to communicate, enabling him to attend public school. He later graduated from Boston University with a degree in special education.
