The Ati-Atihan Festival originated around 1200 AD when 10 Malay chieftains settled on Panay Island with the permission of the indigenous Ati people. It has since evolved into a week-long celebration held each January in Kalibo, Aklan, where participants honor the Santo Niño by painting their skin black and donning colorful costumes to resemble the Ati people.
