What is Preface about?

Initially, 827 abstracts were submitted. The conference was organized into four parallel oral sessions, following a single plenary lecture which started each day's activities. There were, in the end, 308 oral presentations and 247 posters, which were organized into two poster sessions. Poster presentations are a critical component of SSI meetings since they provide a forum for extended discussion, which is not usually possible during the oral sessions. Several prizes were awarded for outstanding poster contributions. For the first time, an award for the best paper published in the previous year in Solid State Ionics was presented. This tradition will be continued at subsequent SSI conferences. The final number of attendees and presentations was severely impacted by the outbreak of swine flu, which curtailed the attendance of a significant number of contributors from both China and Japan. As many of those withdrawing did so at the last minute, the program was very much a fluid entity, even after it had been sent to the printers. As a result, the number of empty oral slots was limited to only one or two. On Sunday, June 28, the technical program was preceded by a series of tutorial s
