There are eight planets that orbit the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Beyond Neptune is the Kuiper Belt, which contains many small icy objects like Pluto. New discoveries in the Kuiper Belt triggered a debate about how to classify these objects. In 2006, the IAU defined planets as objects that orbit the Sun, are round in shape, and have cleared their orbital path. Objects like Pluto that are round but have not cleared their orbit were classified as dwarf planets. The
