The kidney excretes urea through a two-stage process where small molecules are filtered out of the blood in the nephrons and useful molecules are reabsorbed, except for urea. The kidney removes water from the blood by reabsorbing over 99% of the filtered water back into circulation under normal conditions and producing concentrated urine when dehydrated or causing diuresis to remove excess fluid if overloaded.
