Enzymes are proteins made of amino acids that catalyze chemical reactions inside cells. Any reaction within a cell is catalyzed by enzymes. Enzymes were discovered in 1878 and act as biological catalysts to accelerate reactions by lowering their activation energy, allowing reactions that would otherwise take millions of years to occur within milliseconds. Enzymes are classified into six main types based on their molecular functions.
