book review E030 AJA Recently, scholars based in the Balkans and around the world have been collaborating more regularly to address the traditional underrepresentation of the Balkans in wider discourse on urbanization in the ancient Mediterranean. This volume is a noteworthy outcome of such collaboration, both because it emerged from the University of Leiden's international project "An Empire of 2000 Cities: Urban Networks and Economic Integration in the Roman Empire" and because of its ambitious geographic scope. Unlike previous studies that largely consider urbanization in individual Balkan provinces and according to modern borders, Donev covers nearly the entire Roman Balkans: the Pannonian, Moesian, and Dacian provinces; Dalmatia and the northern Adriatic; Upper Macedonia with Epirus; and Thrace except for the northern Aegean. Donev's work also stands out for its focus on quantitative data. Overall, he successfully orients his readers to the origins, hierarchies, and resource potentials of urban centers across Rome's Balkan provinces in the second and third centuries CE. His book thus contributes invaluably to the study of urbanization in the ancient Balkans and Roman empire. W
