Two themes have emerged in criminology over the past two decades: (1) Coercion causes crime and (2) social support prevents crime. The authors review recent theoretical developments to demonstrate these themes can form the basis of a new integrated theory. They develop a theory of differential social support and coercion that brings together concepts from various criminological theories. This integrated theory has implications for developing new public policy approaches to crime.
