Crane remains have been found sporadically at archaeological sites across Europe representing almost all time periods. This document analyzes crane bone evidence from 30 sites in Hungary, Romania, and Slovenia to discuss their presence and possible interpretations based on historical and ethnographic parallels. Most of the sites dated to the Neolithic period. While crane bones most likely represent food remains, they could also indicate cranes being kept as pets. Historical and ethnographic sources suggest
