As Sigmund Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams approaches its l00th anniversary, interest in his life and work by historians and literary critics remains undimmed. However, he is regarded increasingly as a cultural pioneer, whose theories may have in part reflected his own neurotic problems, rather than as a scientist. In the same vein psychiatry has largely abandoned Freud's ideas -even expressing contempt for them in some quarters - in favor of an essentially de-contextualized biological approach to human behavior. In the middle ground organized psychoanalysis struggles to maintain its identity against the onslaughts of psychiatry, representing medicine, on one hand, and psychology, fighting for predominance in psychotherapy on the other.
