Sarpi was a 16th century Italian friar, theologian, scientist and statesman who was born in Venice and showed great intellectual gifts from a young age. He devoted himself to scientific and philosophical studies, gaining recognition as an authority on subjects like mathematics, physics, astronomy, anatomy and physiology. Sarpi played a pivotal role in the conflict between Venice and the Papacy and authored an influential history of the Council of Trent.
