KOR mRNA was up-regulated at days 2 and 14 (85.8% and 67.3%; p < 0.01, respectively). Surgery under sevoflurane also increased prodynorphin mRNA at days 7 and 14 (p < 0.05), and KOR mRNA at day 7 (p < 0.05), but to a lesser degree. In both groups, dynorphin levels were increased at 2, 4, 10 and 14 days after surgery but the global increase was higher in the remifentanil group (p < 0.05). Intraoperative remifentanil administration enhances and extents postoperative H/A and the expression of prodynorphin and KOR mRNA, and dynorphin in DRG. The study suggests that dynorphin at DRG may contribute to the development of postoperative pain sensitization.
