What is Polyurethane-Degrading Enzyme from Mealworms about?
This study identifies a polyurethane-degrading enzyme (MTL) from the gut bacterium Mixta tenebrionis BIT-26, isolated from plastic-eating mealworms. MTL demonstrates significant degradation activity towards various commercial polyurethane substrates and its substrate binding model is proposed through structural and mutational analyses. These findings highlight the potential of gut microbiota in plastic degradation and suggest a new avenue for biotechnological applications in plastic waste management.
