INTRODUCTION AND THEORETICAL BACKGROUND 0.1. A STEPMATRICIAL PARTIAL GRAMMAR In Language, Mathematics, and Linguistics, 1 Charles F. Hockett includes a formal system for a partial grammar which meets the empirical requirements for a generative phonology. We shall use the theoretical framework presented there as a model for a treatment of the phonological system of modern German. Since we need the terminology for talking about the model we shall, first of all, discuss briefly Hockett's system. The format includes strings over an alphabet of morphons, preserving CONSTANCY; stepmatrices over an alphabet of phonons, preserving AUDIBILITY; and the function which maps the former into the latter. The purpose of such a partial grammar is to delinearize the morphon strings which serve as input to the phonology, i.e., to generate two-dimensional displays of phonological components from morphon strings, and, in addition, to characterize the permutational restrictions of phonological constituents.
