This volume looks at the development of one traditional formulation in Indian philosophy of the self and its states of consciousness, the 'catuspad' doctrine. Consisting of waking, dreaming, sleeping, and a fourth, turiya, the catuspad or "four-footed" doctrine of the major states of the self runs through many schools of thought in India, particularly the school of Advaita Vedanta starting with the writings of Gaudapada and continuing with Shankaracharya and many others.
