What is Saussure about?
Saussure divides the basic element of language, the sign, into the signifier (the sensory component like sounds or letters) and the signified (the concept or meaning). This departs from previous theories that saw meaning as coming from the relationship between words and real world referents. By isolating language from actual events of usage and reference, Saussure was able to examine it independently and explain how meaning is constructed through the relationship between the signifier and signified.
