The problems of radiation damage and afterglow nature for CsI scintillators are discussed. A correlation between the afterglow level and radiation stability has been determined. It is shown that oxygen impurities and vacancy-type defects determine the quality of pure CsI scintillators. The mixed Csl4SsBr type crystals possess a higher radiation stability in comparison with pure Csl.
