What is Understanding Heritage and Monuments about?

This document discusses the notion of cultural heritage from a historical perspective. It outlines the evolution of the concepts of monument and cultural heritage, from the Middle Ages to the present day, when they began to include intangible assets and urban ensembles, not just isolated monuments. The notion of urban heritage emerged in the 19th century as a way to preserve pre-industrial cities in the face of the urban transformations of the time.
