A 2009 survey of retirement preparedness in the US and Japan found that Americans were generally better prepared for retirement than Japanese. In the US, 14% were very well prepared compared to only 3% in Japan. 24% of Japanese had no retirement planning compared to 19% of Americans. Retirement savings were also higher in the US, with 17% having over $250,000 compared to only 5.6% of Japanese having over $610,000 in savings. Overall, Americans were more likely to have retirement plans and savings.
