What is Review Article about?

The surge of interest in language planning activities over the past decade is attested by a growing library of books, articles and anthologies, and by the organization of a number of conferences and panels on this subject. In this branch of sociolinguistics, Sinologists have lagged behind scholars working in other areas, at least in part because of the lack of comprehensive and reliable reference tools. This volume by Rosaline Chiu represents an attempt to promote research in this area by bridging the bibliographical gap. Language Contact and Language Planning in China (1900China ( -1967)): A Selected Bibliography (hereafter LCLP) contains 510 entries taken exclusively from Chinese language serials and anthologies. The volume is divided into four sections on (1) dialects, (2) standardization of the Chinese language, (3) minority languages, and (4) loan words.
