Central Sugars Refinery commenced operations in 1965 under a different name with a melting capacity of 150 metric tonnes per day, and has since expanded to 1,800 metric tonnes through modernization and dedication of employees. Originally led by Taiwanese investors, Malaysians now comprise over 55% of shareholders. The company was later taken over by Malayan United Industries and listed on the Kuala Lumpur stock exchange, before being de-listed and reorganized under its current ownership structure in 1983.
