Manchester United is one of the biggest football clubs in Europe. The team was originally formed in 1878 as the works team of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway station in Newton Heath. Over the years, the club grew and severed its ties with the railway to become an independent entity. Sir Alex Ferguson arrived in 1986 and led the club to numerous trophies, including winning their first European Cup in 1990-91 by beating the Spanish champions that year.
