What is John Tyler, champion of the old South, by Oliver Perry Chitwood ... about?
Oliver Chitwood presents readers with a well researched and balanced biography of a much maligned and criticized president. John Tyler was the first vice president to succeed to the presidency on the death of the incumbent. President William Harrison died after only a month in office. His vice president had been selected more to appeal to Southern voters than for his agreeable policy preferences. Tyler's unexpected elevation to highest office confronted his party's leaders with a chief executive following his own views and understanding of the Constitution. His twice use of the veto against measures for a national bank caused such fury that his party expelled him and he became president without a party. Chitwood carefully examines issues, presents Tyler's life long consistency of positions and balances previously hostile and lopsided treatment of this president
