What is Spotlight about?

The Chernobyl disaster is regarded as the worst global radiation accident to date. Deposition of radionuclides was most severe in the Ukraine, Belarus and western Russia. Dissemination also occurred across Europe. To date it is not clear how great the cancer burden from the Chernobyl accident is-or will be-in the European population as a whole. In this report Cardis et al. estimate this burden by using the latest radiation dose estimates, two decades of cancer incidence and mortality data, and novel projection risk models. Looking at risk projections up to 2005 across Europe, about 1,000 cases of thyroid cancer and about 4,000 cases of all other cancers can be attributed to radiation from the Chernobyl accident, accounting for 0.01% of all cancers. Predictions up to 2065 show that 16,000 cases of thyroid cancer and 25,000 cases of other cancers-of the 200 million cases expected from all causes-will probably be attributable to the accident. Data from incidence trends clearly show increased thyroid cancer incidence in Europe, though this is mainly attributable to cases in the most contaminated areas. Increases in other cancers were detected but these actually occurred before the Cher
