What is Modelling the Casting Process of Plastic Ophthalmic Lenses about?
A thermosetting plastic material commercially known as CR-39 is being widely used in the casting of ophthalmic lenses since the 1940s. Little effort, however, has been spent in the past in modelling the manufacturing process of these lenses. One of the major reasons for this is a lack of CR-39 thermophysical properties expressed as a function of temperature. These properties evolve during the polymerisation process during which the monomer converts to a polymer, and are strongly dependent on the rate of conversion. This rate, in turn, is determined collectively by the heating rate and the level of cure at the given moment. In the present project, the required properties were generated for a pre-determined heating regime by using an effective experimental strategy which included a novel experimental rig. These properties were subsequently validated and explained. A finite element model, which satisfactorily predicts the casting process of a range of lenses with different geometries, was developed.
