What is The Place of Black Americans: Rhetoric and Race in the Nineteenth Century about?
## Abstract Chapter 6 shows some of the ways the climatic rhetoric operated in the United States. A variety of people, both Black and white, drew upon the theory of Black people’s bodily suitability for hot places to promote different causes. They made cases for and against emigration out of the country; they argued about the westward expansion of slavery; and they theorized about bodily differences between Black and white people. Black activists both used and condemned the racialized language of climate as they fought against a tide of racism that questioned their place in the country. Ultimately, the chapter shows how pervasive the idea about race, labor, and climate had become by the nineteenth century.
