What is Author's Reply about?

I would like to thank Drs. Zhou and Mathews for their comments on my paper (Titheridge, 2000a), and the discussion they have initiated on the night E region. I will consider each of their points in order. My comment on the lack of any clear correlation between meteoric showers and Es layers was only to suggest that the amount of ionization produced by meteoric ablation is not yet well understood. The point is not necessary to my analysis. Yes, dynamic e ects will alter the structure of the night E region, and account for most of the irregular features (e.g. the transient, descending layers shown by Zhou and Mathews). Production of the stable E layer consistently seen at heights near 105 km, as in the IRI model (based mainly on low-frequency ionograms) and in the mean Arecibo data of Zhou et al. (1999), is another matter. After discussing the "dumping" of metallic ions near 90 km, Zhou and Mathews write "the photochemical E region is centred at or just below 100 km -not at the 105 km assumed by Titheridge". I assume no such thing. Ionization proÿles are calculated, from a full photo-chemical model using current data on the EUV radiation, absorption cross-sections, atmospheric compos
