The reaction of methane with chlorine produces methyl chloride and hydrogen chloride. This reaction occurs through a free radical chain mechanism where (1) heat or light causes chlorine to dissociate into chlorine atoms, (2) chlorine atoms react with methane by abstracting hydrogen to form methyl radicals and hydrogen chloride, and (3) methyl radicals react with chlorine molecules by abstracting chlorine to form methyl chloride and regenerating chlorine atoms to continue the chain reaction.
