This study investigates the shear behavior and capacity of ASTM C1433 precast concrete box culverts under HS 20 truck wheel loads through full-scale experiments and finite-element modeling. Results indicate that the shear capacity of the culverts exceeds the factored critical shear force, challenging AASHTO 2005 provisions regarding shear transfer devices across joints. The findings suggest that the previous specifications may not adequately address the shear transfer requirements for these structures.
