What is Legibility Scale for Early Handwriting about?

This study examined the handwriting legibility of 437 Western Australian students in Years 1-3 when completing writing tasks of increasing cognitive load. Students completed copying, dictation, and composition tasks. A rubric assessed six aspects of legibility. Scores were assigned using pairwise comparisons and analyzed using a Rasch model. The study found that cognitive load impacts handwriting legibility as tasks become more difficult. Implications for practice in handwriting instruction are discussed.
