What is P-138 Exploring the [LDQUO]second-hit[RDQUO] hypothesis in rodents genetically predisposed for DYT-TOR1A dystonia about?
Background: Gradients between lumbar and ventricular cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-composition have been documented in health and disease. E.g., there is a well-known imbalance of protein concentrations in different regions of the CSF space and, generally, protein concentrations in lumbar CSF (200-450mg/l) are higher when compared to ventricular CSF (60-150mg/l). Thus the common ratio between ventricular and lumbar protein concentration in CSF is 1-2.5. Less well documented differences also exist with respect to glucose and lactate in CSF, both of which can be helpful in diagnosing acute CSF-infections. However, potential gradients often are not considered when interpreting CSF results.Rationale: To look for potential gradients between lumbar and ventricular CSF. Methods: We included neurosurgical patients who were treated on an intensive care unit due to an acute critical illness. Within this group of patients, we included only those who had undergone regular CSF drainage due to a variety of indications and who had received a ventricular as well as a lumbar CSF-drainage during their treatment. After change of the drainage system CSF was collected within 24 hours from ventricular as we
